The Swedish police noted as early as 2017 that dark nightclubs with alcohol and crowded conditions are among the most common places for sexual harassment.
Despite this, few cases are reported. Guests often hesitate to come forward, and staff typically intervene only when the situation escalates.
37% of women aged 16–24 feel worried about being subjected to sexual violence when out late at night.
13% of women in the same age group have refrained from activities due to fear of crime.
Among men in the same age group, the figures are only 2% and 7%, respectively.
Sexual harassment in nightlife spaces (bars and clubs) in the Nordic region is often normalized or underreported. Victims describe incidents as “ordinary” or too trivial, delaying recognition and reporting.
